University of UtahOgdenThe Ogden Bicycle Collective was established in 2009, and after a successful summer, they hired their first full-time employee in 2010 thanks to a grant from QBP. 2404 Wall Ave. Contact Josh Jones. Day-Riverside04-21-2010 Day-Riverside Bike Shop OPEN FOR THE 2010 SEASON! The Salt Lake City Public Library and the Bike Collective are pleased to announce the opening of the Day-Riverside Bike Shop to the public for the 2010 season. This satellite location hosts an open workshop at the Day-Riverside branch library (1575 West 1000 North) on Wednesday nights from 6:00-8:00pm.
The workshop offers replacement tubes and patches, cables, and a full set of tools. Anyone is welcome to walk in for minor repairs such as flat tires, basic tune-ups, brake and derailleur adjustments, or component replacement if you bring your own components. We also offer a small team of volunteer mechanics who would be happy to advise on any repairs, and help locate parts if needed.
We also plan to work on some special projects this year including Road 1 safety courses and building Low Rider Bikes. Yes, you read that right. Spoke rims, sissy bars, the works. If anyone is interested in helping out with the workshop contact Clinton Watson at cwatson(at)slcpl(dot)org. Or call 801-594-8632. Happy riding! Update: 08-11-2009 An FYI to the public: the Day-Riverside Bike Station will be open starting August 12th on Wednesday nights only. Open hours will be the same, 6-8:30pm. We hope this dispells some confusion people have had and helps us focus our efforts to better serve those who have been will be using our station. Update: 07-22-2009 WE'RE OPENING! On July 28th at 6:00pm the Day-Riverside bicycle station will tune up its first bicycles ever. Through October, we'll be open Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 6:00 to 8:00pm for basic tune-ups for people living in the Rose Park and Glendale neighborhoods, and anyone passing through. As usual, we're always looking for volunteers. Extensive bike repair experien ce is not required to volunteer with us--the most complicated service available at the station is patching a tire or replacing a cable. If you'd like to be a part of this innovative collaboration of the Bike Collective with the City Library, please contact Clint (cwatson (at) slcpl.org) or call 801-594-8632. Update: 06-14-2009 We've had a remarkably strong response to our previous call for volunteers and are just about ready to start training. If you still want to pitch in, please contact me, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it , as we can always use more hands. Organizational challenges have forced us to delay opening to Mid-July. The Salt Lake City P ublic Library has jumped into the pool of cycling advocacy organizations by partnering with the SLC Bike Collective. Starting July, the City Library will be providing space for a small satellite location of the Collective at the Day-Riverside branch of the Library system. Day-Riverside is located on 1575 West and 1000 North, just off Redwood Road and adjacent the Jordan River and accompanying parkway. We're very excited about this location because it's one of the first advocacy-oriented bike orgs in the North-West side. We consider that point important because it's a location that has practically no retail shops that we would compete with (which we don't want to, and can't, do), has limited access to public transportation and few other options for eco-friendly transit, and has a large community of potential cyclists who just need a little encouragement, support, and instruction. The purpose of the satellite is to provide simple tune-ups and basic instruction to as many people as possible; no component replacements, no major repairs, no bike selling, just cleanings, lubrication, brake and derailleur adjustments, and maybe repacking a hub or bottom bracket now and then. More complicated repairs will be directed to the Bike Collective's main shop as well as people interested in buying or donating bikes. It feels best to start small and not get We are seeking two levels of volunteers:
If you're not sure if you want to be involved, stop in and see. We can always use extra volunteers. And even if you don't have time to volunteer, please spread word about the new location and come out to visit (but protect your tires from the goatheads.) If you want to sign up, please contact Clinton Watson. |
