We need patient volunteers to enlighten the minds of young mechanics. Contact us if you are interested in becoming and Earn-A-Bike Instructor. Ironically you do not need any previous bike mechanic skills or experience. The quality we look for the most is your ability to work with young adults. If that is something you relate to, we will gladly teach you the mechanics part. Because bicycles are so tactile the students can see change and accomplishment every step of the way. This makes the experience incredibly rewarding for both the students and the teachers. Also, as a volunteer you are not obligated to come and teach every day of the class -- just give what time you and your schedule feel comfortable donating. For more info on the course click here. Aspects of the class: - Get to know the students and establish a friendly yet role model relationship.
- Help the pick bicycles that fit.
- Help them completely dismantle that bicycle.
- Help them prepare the frames and forks for powdercoating.
- Go on a field trip to the Steel Coatings' Powder Coating Facility.
- Rebuild Hubs and clean parts.
- After receiving the frames and forks back from Steel Coatings -- we rebuild them from scratch replacing any parts that need it.
- Help them try on new helmets and give them locks.
- Help them celebrate their newly earned bike, helmet and lock.
- Time, weather, and age permitting, we will teach either a Kids I or Kids II course and go on rides.
Also because you will be working with kids, you are required to fill out a Background Check Waiver (27 KB). Please fill this form out and give it to Ken Perko.
