Salt Lake City Bicycle Collective

"The best part was when they use their extra time and knowledge to become a peer-mentor. As an Earn-a-Bike Instructor, those moments where the student becomes the teacher make it all worth it.”

- Jonathan Morrison

If you really get into it, inquire about volunteering your new found knowledge during our Do-It-Yourself Nights (we really need confident women for the women's night), or as an Youth Instructor in our Earn-a-Bike classes.  We can teach people to be technical, but we can't teach them to be personable, so if you like people, we can turn you into a great mechanic.

If you have any questions contact our Shop Manager.

Bicycle boost: Salt Lake City wheels forward with initiative to donate cycles

...

Council members earlier this month approved a deal to donate up to 400 bicycles found or confiscated by the city police department each year to the Salt Lake City Bicycle Collective.

"It provides people with a low-cost, sustainable form of transportation that's environmentally friendly," said Dave Iltis, chairman of the Mayor's Bicycle Advisory Committee. "It's healthy and it doesn't use gas."

The collective refurbishes the used bicycles and puts them back out in the community. Most of the bikes go to low-income and refugee families.

"Everyone needs to get around," said collective director Jonathan Morrison. "And car ownership is not cheap."

Volunteer for Trips for Kids®!

E-mail Print PDF

2010 marks our 3rd year of Trips for Kids® Salt Lake City! TFK® is a mountain bike program for disadvantaged youth, rooted in Marin County, CA, with locations throughout the United States. We have a flock of hardtail mountain bikes and a truck with trailer to transport the bikes. This will be the second year I'll be heading up the Salt Lake Chapter of TFK®. As the primary volunteer, albeit paid through UCC Americorps, I'll need some help this coming mountain bike season. We currently need the following to expand and successfully carry out our rides program:

VOLUNTEERS - for planning, outreach, and ride leaders.

Planning - this entails helping me make decisions on the where, what, and how of our program.

Outreach - volunteer and organization outreach i.e. cold calling, e-mail, tableing and follow-up

- may also include tasks such as grant writing.

Ride Leaders -  attend rides, unload/reload bikes, helmet fittings, mountain bike training, and

hang out w/ the youth!

Note: Dedicated (attending 3 scheduled rides) ride leaders will be given paid CPR/Frist Aid Training.

GROUPS - organizations for rides with transportation to the trailheads.

Organizations - can include non-profits, schools, after-school programs, youth groups, etc.
